New season starts for museums

It’s a place to learn not just the history of Prince Albert, but about the city itself.

That is how Michelle Taylor, program manager at the Prince Albert Historical Museum, describes the museum.

“You see how the people have evolved, how the city has evolved and how they’ve overcome a lot of their hardships,” Taylor said.

All four Prince Albert museums including Diefenbaker House, The Evolution of Education Museum, Rotary Museum of Police and Corrections and Prince Albert Historical Museum opened their doors for the season.

Taylor has been working in the Historical Museum, which resides in Prince Albert’s old fire hall on Central Avenue, to give some new life to some very old artifacts.

“We want to make the museum a little more interactive,” Taylor said as she took down the “Do Not Touch” sign off the old fire truck.

She said when it comes to some artifacts, like the truck, they are making so visitors can actually go inside and see what it’s like.

Taking in the view from the upstairs tearoom deck, Taylor said she really wants to encourage people in the downtown area to take their lunch break out there.

“You know when you just want to get out of the office you can come up here and eat your lunch and get to look at a beautiful view.”

Taylor is also the creator of a new clothing display with full outfits including a timeline of fashion and how it’s developed with technology over the years. She said some of the dresses are so small to today’s standards that they had to customize the mannequins.

Another hat Taylor wears is working with the schools.

“We want to develop programs to get the curriculum aligned with what’s in the museum so that the teachers have resources to work with when they come in here and it’s not just a tour.” She said the museum is very eclectic and there really is something for everyone.

The museums are open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. every day of the week until the September long weekend.
