Teachers strike cancels Plant A Forest event

May 25, 2011 | 6:45 AM

A tradition for Grade 5 students in Prince Albert has been uprooted by the teachers strike.

The 22nd annual Power99fm Plant A Forest, planned for today, is not going ahead this year with teachers leaving the classroom today for the second time this month.

The event’s organizers decided the event couldn't be saved and made the decision Tuesday morning to cancel it.

“It’s very disappointing,” said Garth Kalin, Operations Manager for Rawlco Radio Prince Albert.

He said it’s the first time the event has been cancelled.

“We’ve never even had to postpone due to weather let alone cancel it. A lot of hard works went into this. I know that the kids always look forward to it it’s a great day out they learn about the environment a lot of the kids go back in years and they go there are the trees we planted.”

The Plant a Forest brings out about 500 Grade 5 students each year to Little Red River Park to plant about 10,000 tree seedlings. During the past 21 years more than 10,000 students planted more than a quarter of a million trees, Kalin said.

“Things happen and unfortunately we won’t be able to carry forward this year and we just want to make sure all the parents know, so they don’t send their kids out to plant trees.”

All we can do is look forward to next year’s event, said Kalin
