PA Pistol and Rifle Club at Maple Leaf Open in Leduc, AB

May 17, 2011 | 8:59 AM

The members of the Prince Albert Pistol and Rifle Club Junior Program attended the 2011 Maple Leaf Open in Leduc, Albert.

Our athletes competed in Olympic-style Air Pistol matches and did very well against over 40 other shooters.

Team members were Jeremy Gyoerick, Quinten Saunders, Easton Stewart, Shana Webb and Tianna Stewart of Prince Albert, Drew Nevland of Birch Hills, and Chris Klemens of Cadet who are all coached by Grant Lavigne.

Jeremy and Drew each came in first place winning a Maple Leaf Coin and Tianna won a Bronze medal in their respective matches which consist of 2 qualifying rounds of 60 shots each for men and 40 shots each for women plus finals of 10 shots for both men and women.

Many of our athletes shot personal best scores which is quite an accomplishment as they train on paper targets and this match was shot on the new electronic targets, which are required at the Olympic Level.

How the electronic targets work is that sound sensors pick up the shot from the competitors, and each shot is given a value by the sensors.

The information about the shot is uploaded to the computer software and both the shooter and the audience can see where the shot hit the target almost immediately on monitors located around the shooting range.

The Maple Leaf Air Open competition was held Friday, May 13 to Sunday, May 15 in Alberta at the Leduc Recreation Center's curling pad.

The PAPRC Juniors train at the Prince Albert Wildlife Federation building on Monday nights from 7 to 9 pm. For more information about joining, please call 940-7836.
