Green Lake to Host NSCRD/U of R IMP Labs B-ING Hip Hop Workshop

On May 13 & 14, 2011 Green Lake will host the B-ING Hip Hop Workshop at St. Pascal School.

The Northern Sport, Culture and Recreation District (NSCRD) is working with the Interactive Media and Performance (IMP) Labs of the University of Regina to offer a two day workshop in beatmaking, DJing, graffiti, mobile media, and break dancing.

Lead by Dr. Charity Marsh, the team from the IMP Labs of the University of Regina will deliver the B-ING Hip Hop two day Workshop which will include learning and experience in basic musical elements used in hip hop tracks; how to structure a song (intro, chorus, verse, bridge, hook, etc.); how to create beats on the MPC and transfer music to the computer; edit and mix beats in different audio computer programs (Ableton Live, Garage Band, etc.); the beginning elements of DJing (cue, baby scratch, mixing, connecting beats); the basics for graffiti arts; and the basics of break dancing.

Youth from seven northern communities including the host community Green Lake, Beauval, Buffalo Narrows, Dillon, Pinehouse, La Ronge, and Sandy Bay will be participating.

“This will be an awesome opportunity for the youth. For some of them, it will be their first exposure to hip hop training. We are fortunate to be working with enthusiastic and experienced professionals and artists from the University of Regina Interactive Media & Performance Labs.

Hip Hop is popular with youth and is a great thing for storytelling, creativity, physical activity and more. We hope that the workshop will inspire the youth and their community supports to continue to be involved in hip hop.”, says Judy MacLeod Campbell, Program Manager for Culture & Community Development at the Northern Sport, Culture and Recreation District.

Funding support for the workshop was provided by the Ministry of Tourism, Parks, Culture & Sport, Government of Saskatchewan, as well as sponsorship from the Northern Lights School Division #113.

“We are happy to host the B-ING Hip Hop Workshop here in Green Lake. Our youth are excited to take part and to host the workshop as well. It will be a good experience for our community.”, says Rita Arnault from St. Pascal School in Green Lake.
