Grading, delivery changes in place for winter wheat

May 11, 2011 | 10:17 AM

The Canadian Wheat Board has introduced new grading systems for prairie farmers who grow higher quality winter wheat.

Protein minimums will be in place as of Aug.1 for numbers 1 and 2 Canada Western Red Winter Wheat.

These changes will help make prairie winter wheat more competitive on the world market, said Lawrence Klusa, quality control manager for the wheat board.

'It provides us with more tools and it provides us a better class grain to compete against U.S. red winter. When we get red winter that's above 11 per cent protein in terms of milling and quality, its very good versus U.S. varieties,” Klusa said.

A number three grade has also been introduced by the Canadian Grain Commission.

There is also a new requirement for producers to sign up by June 24 if they want to deliver select winter wheat and receive the premiums.

Spring signup does not lock a producer into delivering, but is required in order to provide the board with an indication of the potential volume and location of this top quality winter wheat.

After contracts are signed, the board said it will designate the stations where Canada Western Red Winter select can be delivered.
