Politicians lead by example to kick off Pitch in Week

May 4, 2011 | 4:41 PM

It's a dirty job, but everyone’s got to do it.

Organizers of Pitch in Week are encouraging the public to do their small part to clean-up Prince Albert.

The annual spring campaign that rids the city of litter got off to a slow start today because of the rain, but a few dedicated citizens braved the elements.

“Well I think it’s pretty obvious, as you drive through the areas of Prince Albert, winter has hidden a great deal of litter,” said Mayor Jim Scarrow, who was out picking trash.

Scarrow, along with Councilor Jayne Remenda and James Banman, Manager of Downtown Improvement District, spent part of the morning picking trash across from the downtown A&W.

It’s about community pride, Banman said.

“It’s cleaning up our community after a long winter,” he said.

“Let’s not leave it to the other guy,” said Scarrow, who challenged other citizens to clean-up their yards, alleys and streets.

“We are the gateway to the north and tourist country. Let’s make our city look real pretty by the time June rolls around.”

Events have been scheduled for this week and the following week to encourage residents to band together. Pitch in Week culminates with the start of a free week at the landfill which begins May.16.
