Update: Two Prince Albert police officers under investigation

May 3, 2011 | 7:44 AM

Two members of the Prince Albert Police Service have been charged with assault.

Police Chief Dale McFee told reporters, at a press conference, that two male officers have been charged for two separate incidents.

McFee said the first incident occurred on Oct. 3, 2010. An altercation occurred with a female suspect, and physical force was used as a result. A public complaint was filed with the Public Complaints Commission.

The other member was charged for an incident on Dec. 31, 2010, where physical force was used during the arrest of a male suspect. It came to the service’s attention through an internal review, and the case was sent to the Public Complaints Commission for investigation.

The Prince Albert Police Service charged both members with assault on Monday, following recommendation by the Ministry of Justice.

“Policing is a really tough job… and our demographics in Prince Albert are unique,” said Sgt. Jason Stonechild.

“We have a higher than normal frequency of individuals we have to arrest and encounter, and with that will come incidents that occur. Like I said, we’re professional and we have great men and women that work for our organization, and it’s unfortunate when you hear about these incidents, these allegations that may affect all our members. But… they’re professional people and we have faith in the system, and hopefully it’ll work out in the end.”

McFee said the names of the officers and details of the events are not being released until it’s presented publicly in court on May 17.

“To maintain the proper balance and interest to members, we will not comment on evidence before it is publicly presented at trial,” said McFee.

The officers, one with two years experience and the other with seven,  have been removed from active service with pay.

The names of the two members have been confirmed as George Neufeld and Michael Ozar.
