Regina's North Central area is about to get a major facelift.

It was announced Monday that $38.8 million in combined capital funding is being put in for the construction of a new integrated learning facility in the inner city community.

The Ministry of Education, the City of Regina, the Regina Public Schools, and the Regina Public Library are all contributing to the new building which will include a high school, (Scott Collegiate), a public library, a recreation complex, and child care facility.

The Ministry of Education is a primary contributor investing $16.2 million toward the school component.

Education Minister Donna Harpauer calls the building a tremendous plus.

“We look at it as revitalization piece, we look at it as a very important piece for the growth of the community,” said Harpauer. “It's also about support for the students because they are the future of this community.”

The city is putting in $8.8 million. Mayor Pat Fiacco said it's all about the future of the students and the city.

“It's really about the impact it's going to have on our young people and, in general, citizens right across our communities,” said Fiacco. “The new Saskatchewan has to make sure that it doesn't matter where you are on the economical sale, that you're able to participate. I think this is certainly going to allow this to happen.”

The new facility, dubbed the North Central Shared Facility, hasn't formally been named yet. It now goes into the detailed design phase. Once construction starts, it's expected to take 15 to 18 months to build.
