Local attempts for PBR honours

The cheers in Prince Albert were particularly loud at the Ryan Byrne Invitational Pro Bullriding event, as local Tanner Byrne tried for the top prize.

Byrne did well, but lost in the final round.

“Today it wasn’t too good,” he said.

“I had a pretty good bull and I just kind of stubbed my toe and got bucked off but it’s always good to come to P.A. and ride I mean the hometown crowds behind you 100 per cent. It’s a pretty cool place”

While he didn't walk away with the top prize Saturday night, there isn’t much time to dwell on the loss.

“We’re all over the place really. We’ve got rodeos and bullridings all during the week and all weekend so were mostly just striving to the next one.”

When asked how anyone could ride a bucking bull, even for a short time, Byrne just laughed.

“I don’t know. It’s just what I’ve always done it’s what I’ve always know since I was young. It’s just the adrenalin rush and you get going and you just try to win. It’s awesome,” he said.

Byrne was one among the 25 men called the toughest in sport at the Art Hauser Centre, Friday and Saturday night.

The competition brought together some of the toughest riders and the maddest bulls around.

One of the most impressive rides on the weekend came from Billy West. At 16-years-old he’s still two years shy of joining the professional tour.

Top Canadian rider Zane Lambert proved his title winning the tournament this weekend but according to Byrne all the riders brought some good competition.

“This is always a good event. The bulls always buck hard here and everybody comes to ride and P.A. is always a good event.”
