Clean Out Your Medicine Cabinets

Apr 18, 2011 | 1:26 PM

It’s spring time!
Spring time is a time to freshen up your home and yard.

It’s time to sort out the old and bring in the new. Most people do their spring cleaning consisting of washing walls, windows and cabinets. This is also a great time to clean out your medicine cabinet.

Did you know most of your pharmaceutical items have expiry dates?

Did you know that if you use these expired medications they will not work as effectively?
Take some time this year and look at eachof your items in your medication cabinet.

• Check the dates to see if they are expired.
• Check to see if you need these medications still. Do you still use them? If you find any that are no
use to you or that are expired dispose of them properly.
• Do not dump them into the toilet or down the sink.
• Don’t throw them into the garbage.
• Place the old medications into a bag and bring them into a local pharmacy of your choice. The
pharmacist will destroy them properly so they do not harm the environment or someone who may
find them.

If you have children, please take time to store the medications properly. Put them up high where
children cannot reach them. Children are smart. If they know medications taste like candy and they
know where they are, children may try to climb up to reach them.

Most  medications are small and colorful; children may think they are candy and not realize they are harmful. Put medications out of reach or consider a locked cabinet.
Talk to your pharmacist if you are not sure if your medications should be destroyed or if you have
questions about your medicine.

They are professionals that are there to answer questions and help you with your needs.
