Teachers and School Boards Association no closer to a deal

Teachers and their employer remain miles apart as a possible strike draws near.

Talks broke off after a month of bargaining with wages remaining the number one issue for teachers. They want a 12 per cent raise over one year while the School Boards Association is offering 5.5 per cent over three years.

A so-called “sanctions vote” was held Wednesday but we won't know the results for at least another couple of weeks. We do know that it could mean anything from a partial withdrawal of services to an all-out strike.

Education Minister Donna Harpauer says she's taking a wait and see approach.

“We're not going to panic at this point in time but we will be very mindful of the steps that may have to be taken. I know they have in the past,” said Harpauer.

Steve Allen with the Saskatchewan Teachers Federation says he'd rather be at the bargaining table than on strike.

“The province has illustrated that they have the funds, that they have all kinds of money. But they certainly don't seem willing to bargain in good faith,” said Allen.

Allan says a partial of withdrawal of services could mean a wide range of things but he won't get into the specifics of what that might entail.
