U.S. ED’s OSDFS’ SAFE AND SUPPORTIVE TA CENTER ANNOUNCES A WEBINAR ON ADDRESSING RISK BEHAVIOR THROUGH POSITIVE YOUTH DEVELOPMENT STRATEGIES, WEDNESDAY, APRIL 13, 2011, 4:00 P.M. – 5:30 P.M. EDT, AND THURSDAY, APRIL 14, 2011, 11:00 A.M. – 12:30 P.M., EDT

The U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Safe and Drug-Free Schools’ Safe and Supportive Schools Technical Assistance Center will present the third in its series of School Climate Survey Webinars entitled “Addressing Risk Behavior through Positive Youth Development Strategies.”

This Webinar will be offered twice to accommodate schedules: Session 1: Wednesday, April 13, 2011 4:00 pm – 5:30 pm EDT; and Session 2: Thursday, April 14, 2011 11:00 am – 12:30 pm EDT. Please register for one of the sessions at http://safesupportiveschools.ed.gov/index.php?id=9&eid=22.

Those who successfully register will receive a confirmation email and information on how to connect to each Webinar will be sent to those who register the evening before the event. Space to attend the Webinars is limited, however. Therefore, please register now. The Center will maintain a waiting list and contact those on the list should space become available.

This webinar will examine the role of Positive Youth Development strategies in enhancing academic achievement, addressing risk behavior in our youth and promoting a safe school climate.

Dr. Peter C. Scales, Senior Research Fellow at the Search Institute, and Mr. Clay Roberts, Senior Trainer for Vision Training Associates, will address the following:

Common principles across Positive Youth Development models and the power of their cumulative effect

• Current research on the impact of positive youth development strategies on school climate and school success

• What Positive Youth Development has to do with schools

(Care + Challenge = Improved Performance)

• The power of a blended Positive Youth Development and Risk Reduction approach in education

• Specific strategies from the field reflecting the principles identified above
