Tax help for low-income people

Apr 8, 2011 | 12:16 PM

The end of April is the filing deadline for the 2010 tax year and an organization in Prince Albert is helping people meet that date.

Free Tax Clinics for low income people are being held at the Indian Metis Friendship Center, which were set up specifically to help those who make less than $30,000 a year.

“Although the income can be higher depending on the number of dependents,” said Janet Carriere, a family worker with the Prince Albert Indian and Metis Friendship Center.

Carriers job at the friendship Centre includes making sure low income families have their needs met.

“In order to continue to receiving Child Tax benefits, GST, your taxes have to be filed and most of the people that we serve are very low-income. They cannot afford to go to a professional tax place and pay to have their returns done and if they don’t have their returns done then their money stops.”

At the Friendship center Carriere estimated the team does about 800 tax returns a year and though the deadline for filing is approaching, she said they do taxes all year round.

An extra set of hands and eyes are hired during the busy tax season and there are tax clinics every day week day. The tax clinic team also helps people with back taxes.

“We have people out there who have never filed or haven’t filed for a few years so as long as they fit within the income bracket, we’ll catch them up to date so they’re back on track.”

While the filing deadline is the end of April people can continue to make use of the tax service at the Friendship Center all year round. Carriere said they can file taxes electronically until September and after that they can still submit paper versions.
