Nurses concerned about lack of nursery

A nurse received a standing ovation at the Saskatchewan Union of Nurses general meeting, Thursday.

Linda Fincaryk, who works in the maternity ward at RUH, said she is concerned about the focus on family-centrered care.

She said she frustrated that there is no longer a general nursery for newborn babies. Now newborns stay with their mothers at all times, instead of a large nursery where babies are watched while mothers rest. In some cases that is a room with four beds, four mothers and four babies.

Fincaryk said she sees the new model leaves parents exhausted —that many new moms leave the hospital early.

“For a family experiencing anything outside of the normal this is not a model conducive to rest, respite and recovery,” Fincaryk said.

The family-centrered model of care only works under ideal circumstances, she said.

There is the space and staff available to return to the original model, all that is required is the go ahead from management, Fincaryk said.

Last week at Regina General Hospital a baby died hours after being born.

The mother feels if the baby was in a nursery, this never would have happened.

Health Minister Don McMorris did not offer a solution to the problem.
