La Ronge still under fire threat, Chief offers updates

For many northerners, a mandatory evacuation turned their weekend upside down.

Thousands of people were forced to leave from the tri-community area of La Ronge Saturday night.

Chief Tammy Cook Searson says they transported around 1,100 people on 24 buses to Prince Albert.

The biggest evacuation of the north this season is enough to have thousands of people in a panic, but leaders are updating the public and assuring them the situation is to be dealt with calmly.

There’s no question that firefighters have been dedicated to fighting northern wildfires this month, but on Friday night they came too close for comfort.

Prince Albert Grand Council fundraising for evacuees

With many evacuees to Prince Albert still unable to return home, the Prince Albert Grad Council (PAGC) is working to improve their stay as much as they can.

Ron Michel, grand chief of the PAGC, said they started putting their Emergency Command Centre together on Monday.

After weeks of fires terrorizing communities in northern Saskatchewan, a gust of wind has meant the worst for Montreal Lake.
