Focus back on healthy families at 1st annual breakfast

Mar 16, 2015 | 5:09 PM

It’s an event to celebrate the positive – not the negative.

On Tuesday morning the Prince Albert Grand Council Women’s Commission will hold its 1st Annual Peacemakers Breakfast in Prince Albert.

Nancy McMahon, family violence co-ordinator, said the purpose of the breakfast is to highlight families that are trying to live violence-free lives.  She said they’re accomplishing that by attending family-friendly events like barbecues, round-dances and events that don’t include alcohol.

“In the news today we hear a lot of negative news stories about people that are getting into trouble and then we don’t really hear about families that are out there, there are a lot of families that are trying and succeeding,” she said.

The breakfast is free for everybody and runs from 9:30 to 11 a.m. at the Prince Albert Indian Metis Friendship Centre.

“We’re having a breakfast that is free for everybody except the registration fee canned food donation going to the food bank.  We’ll have a couple speakers; one elder and one young boy that’ll be speaking about how he’s trying to live a positive, violence-free life,” she said.

The idea came from a similar event in Regina that will be holding its 15th annual breakfast.

“We followed their format and hopefully this will continue on year after year in Prince Albert,” she said.

McMahon is hoping to see around 100 people in attendance.

The breakfast is in co-ordination with the Prince Albert Indian Metis Friendship Centre and Prince Albert Co-operative Health Centre.  It’s sponsored by the ministry of justice.
