The Victoria Hospital Foundation is excited to announce the approval of funding from the Kinsmen Foundation and Telemiracle for the purchase of a new ultrasound machine for our diagnostics area.

This new ultrasound has dramatic improvements over our existing machine by offering more detailed and superior quality scans of vascular, musculoskeletal imaging and in particular, breast lesions.

Currently, patients that have breast lesions that require a biopsy for further investigation, have been forced to travel to Saskatoon.  Our present unit was not able to detect lesions less than 5mm and with poor resolution.  This new unit will allow biopsy procedures to be performed in our hospital, saving patients money, time and stress.

In addition, a quicker diagnosis will mean possible better cancer outcomes for many patients.  The ultrasound machine will cost $169,000.

“We are very grateful for the support of the Victoria Hospital Foundation and the Kinsmen Foundation.  This new technology will enable us to detect finer/subtler pathology of all body parts, decreasing the need for radiation heavy modalities such as Computerized Tomography (CT) scan in many clinical scenarios. Mammography patients that meet certain criteria based on their imaging will now be able to obtain ultrasound-guided breast biopsies here in Prince Albert without the need to travel to the Saskatoon. Vascular imaging, particularly in the scrutiny of neck arteries for possible high grade narrowing will also be greatly improved with the new scanner we will receive.”

Dr. Cesar Chavarria, Chief of Radiology

We are extremely grateful to Telemiracle and the Kinsmen Foundation for their immense generosity.   It is reassuring to learn that their organization cares deeply about the health and well-being of all citizens in every corner of our province.  Our hospital now will be able to take that next vital step in the right direction for early breast cancer detection for our community.
