Prevent a House Fire

Feb 28, 2015 | 9:12 AM

Of the approximately 24,000 house fires that occur in Canada each year, a staggering 20% of them start in the kitchen.

Keeping your family safe is important to us here at the Canadian Red Cross.

Safety tips to keep in mind whenever you’re preparing a meal:

  • Stay in the kitchen while frying, grilling, or broiling food. If you leave the kitchen for even a short period of time, turn off the stove.
  • Keep curtains, dish towels, plastic containers and pot holders away from hot surfaces.
  • Clean cooking surfaces and keep appliance surfaces free of spills and grease that may catch fire.

Each year, an average of 10,000 Canadians receive personal disaster assistance from Canadian Red Cross Disaster Management volunteers. The stories our volunteers hear are sometimes tragic and some could have been prevented.

The best way to prepare yourself and your family for an emergency situation such as a fire is to follow these steps: know the risks, make a plan, and get a kit.http://www.redcross.ca/what-we-do/emergencies-and-disasters-in-canada/for-home-and-family/personal-disaster-infographic?utm_source=house-en&utm_medium=email&utm_content=FD&utm_campaign=pd_infog_v1

On average, the Red Cross helps more people after home fires than all other personal disasters combined. We’re able to provide immediate support and help long after the smoke clears thanks to generous gifts from donors like you.

Thank you for supporting the Canadian Red Cross and please stay safe in the kitchen this year.
