900 CKBI back on air

Aug 8, 2011 | 2:27 PM

After about six hours of being off air 900 CKBI is back up and running.

A power outage had the radio station running on generators all weekend until another problem started, early Monday morning.

“Along the way there was a secondary problem that popped up and we ended up calling in some help out of Saskatoon to determine what the problem was,” said Kelly Parkinson, director of engineering for Rawlco in Prince Albert.

“What we’ve found … is there is an excessive amount of water in the area out there that has contributed to the problem.”

According to SaskPower technicians, lightening directly hit a power pole, which took out two transformers, near the transmitter site, Parkinson said.

The generator ran like it was supposed to, but right near the very end, just before the power came back on early this morning, the water affected some of the equipment, effectively knocking CKBI off air for several hours.

This is a rare event, Parkinson said.

“We have all sorts of checks and balances and contingencies and backups, so yes it is very rare for a station to go off the air for any length of time, really.”
