When an opportunity presents itself…take it and watch it grow! And that’s exactly what local owner and operator of Nutters Everyday Naturals, Janine Favreau, recently did with the expansion of the store in Prince Albert.

Nutters Everyday Naturals has been serving P.A and area for 34 years and was among the first Nutter’s franchises to open back in 1984. Favreau is also the company’s longest serving franchisee – a cause for celebration!

When the neighbouring space became open, everything seemed to fall into place.  Favreau’s husband Ron, an experienced contractor, was available to take on the expansion project. The store was able to remain open while the construction work happened behind the wall. She credits a lot to his extensive expertise in getting the job done efficiently and there has been no looking back.

Now, nothing but appreciation is felt from Favreau when she hears customers commenting. “It warms my heart whenever customers come into the store and express how beautiful the new look is and comment on the openness of the store. The support from the community has been unbelievable.” Her instincts were right, since the expansion, she is witnessing substantial growth.

So what exactly her secret to success? According to Favreau, it’s based on two things: liking what you do and working hard at it. “I didn’t take my first full week of holidays until my tenth year. It has never felt like work to me, even after 34 years. I am so focused at work, but I had to be here to make it work. For all the time and hours I have put in, I couldn’t have done it if it wasn’t enjoyable. A new business needs time and dedication…it is a must. You have to be there – in the store, hands on – to be in business.”

Favreau insists on maintaining exceptional customer service and providing her staff with on-going product knowledge training and hands-on product experience. With advancements and the growth of the industry, she continues to keep an open-mind and is always looking for ideas to help the business in any way. “We are so different from other Nutter’s operations; the majority do not carry as extensive bulk foods and specialty gourmet foods sections that we do, which is another business in itself, separate from the supplements and natural foods.”

The growth of Nutter’s, Prince Albert, is also attributed to a proven retail marketing practice where she positioned herself over the years, as the trusted face of the store. “Since 1995, I have actively done advertorials in the local newspapers, with my photo to market myself. As times are changing, I have also incorporated ads with the on-line newspaper. And to reach more customers, we have recently been sending out my ads via electronic mail. By marketing myself with the photo, my customers know they are truly getting the facts when they read the article. I keep the copy brief, writing it more in a bullet point style, to make it easy for people to read. I’ve had great success with those articles.”

In recognition of such determination and hard work, in 2014, Favreau was the inaugural recipient of the Samuel McLeod Business Award for Prince Albert’s Female Business Leader of the Year. Nutter’s Prince Albert is a repeat winner of People’s Choice awards and five year winner of the Prince Albert Best of the Best award.

A mutual respect has developed over time between Favreau and the leaders of Nutter’s, Donald and Lynn Cranston. According to Cranston, “When I look back at Janine’s progress and various accomplishments over the years, several powerful traits emerge rather clearly. Janine is an energetic, focused, determined entrepreneur who started out with a bulk food store and then carefully and thoughtfully shaped it into becoming a stunning natural food and wellness retail store. Her commitment to detail and ongoing efforts towards employee training in customer experience and product knowledge are the foundations of her success.” “With Janine, there is a relentless pursuit of quality products, along with new and innovative products which has been paramount to her overall success as a retailer.”
