Essential Fats to Reduce Dryness and Slow Aging

Sep 19, 2017 | 8:10 AM

Chris and Teena and I were talking about essential fats on CKBI this morning.

Chris thought that I meant bacon cheeseburgers. Let me explain.

Essential fats are also called essential fatty acids. They’re called essential because the body can’t make them. You need to get them from foods. You do need dietary fat. It’s just that most of us could benefit from way less dietary fat and way better quality sources.

Our brains and our hearts love essential fatty acids. Skin loves essential fatty acids. If you have noticed that your skin is more dry, even just over the past week when temperatures really started to dip, think about adding a little more of the good fats to your diet.

Essential fatty acids are found in nuts, seeds and grains. They are also found in fish. Flax seed oil is a great vegetable source.

Cod liver oil is a great fish source. You can get capsules if you can’t stand the thought of oil on a spoon.

Another way to help out your skin is to apply oil. Human sebum is a protective barrier that hydrates our skin. It most closely resembles jojoba oil but acne prone people sometimes break out from jojoba, even when their skin is dry. Try a pure olive oil, a mashed up avocado, or blend the two together to make a hydrating mask for skin. This mask doesn’t just help with dryness; it helps slow the skin’s aging process.  It’s like two masks in one!
