The Easter and Skin Connection

April 11, 2017 - 2:58pm

I love Easter. Of course I do; I’m part Ukrainian!

Part of Easter means I get to eat terrific, traditional Easter breads, just like my Baba used to make.

Let’s talk about some Easter treats and how they impact skin.

Easter eggs... I painted Easter eggs as a kid. I hated it!  Man, was I brutal. No delicate, awe inspiring works of art from these hands. Eggs are good for your skin. Eggs are a great source of protein and skin loves and needs protein. The body needs protein in the diet in order to make collagen.

Let’s talk about the famous egg white mask:  beaten egg whites applied to the face and left on until dry. The claims are that it tightens skin. No chance. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but it’s just not possible. The egg white face masque has caused pimples and skin irritation for some. My vote:  give it a pass.

Easter chocolate bunnies... Milk chocolate is a no no for skin. High in sugar, it triggers inflammation which breaks down collagen and can also trigger acne or rosacea flares. However, if you indulge in dark chocolate with at least 70% cocoa, it’s very good for your skin.

Truly dark chocolate has antioxidants in it. When you think of antioxidants, think anti aging.

Cocoa is high in protein, fiber, and micronutrients. It fills us up and makes us feel satisfied. It actually takes away sugar cravings. High cocoa content chocolate also reduces stress hormones. That’s another win for skin.

Happy Easter to you and your skin.
