The Night Before Surgery

Nov 3, 2016 | 2:30 PM

Surgery.

Many of us likely have already had, or will have, some type of operation at the Victoria Hospital. Whether it be emergency or planned, a hernia repair or hip replacement, a c-section or mastectomy, our hospital has 31 skilled and highly trained surgeons ready for us when that time comes.

This year, our 11th Annual Give a Little Life Day has turned its focus toward the critical role of our surgical units. And what an important mission indeed, with over 300 different types of surgery and almost 6,000 surgeries being performed in total every year.

So if the day comes when we learn that we will require an operation, we might ask ourselves a few questions the night before as we lay in bed:

  • Will this operation fix my problem and how quickly?
  • Will there be pain?
  • Did I plan properly at work and will things go smoothly while I’m away from my job?  (I hope the staff send me flowers.)
  • If you have a young family, you might worry about childcare arrangements while you’re recovering.
  • I know I’m not supposed to eat before surgery, but what about coffee?  IS COFFEE OK?!
  • I wonder how long I’ll need to be in hospital?
  • Can I bring my cell phone?
  • Who will drive me in the morning?

There are many arrangements to be made and many questions we may have.  And depending on the gravity of our health issue, we may even be concerned about our life.

But I am willing to bet one question most of us will ‘not’ ask ourselves, is “does my surgical team have the best instruments, the latest equipment – to care for me tomorrow?”

Your support of Give a Little Life Day on December 2, will make sure that they do.

On December 2, the Victoria Hospital Foundation and all three JPBG radio stations will broadcast live from the Victoria Hospital Main lobby from 6 am – 6pm to raise money for additional and upgraded surgical equipment for the surgical units in our hospital.  The need is urgent and we ask for your help.

On December 2, we ask that you please listen, then please give.
