Thanks-Giving

Oct 6, 2016 | 7:32 AM

Growing up in the country south of us, Thanksgiving was always a huge holiday.

While the origins can be debated, we were always taught that the first Thanksgiving was a meal shared by the native people of the land and a religious community called Pilgrims. Relations between these people groups seems to be healthy at the time.

I’m not an historian so I can’t really accurately say what happened but history has shown, I believe, that something in the relationship changed. Despite the truth of that, the holiday was eventually established around harvest time, originally to thank God for “His” provision.

History has a way of repeating itself. Habits and holidays form and we celebrate, not always knowing why or even caring. It’s an opportunity to eat!

Whether or not you have religious or spiritual foundations of understanding, I think that thanking someone is something we all enjoy, regardless of which end we are on.

My family will thank God for loving and caring for us but I think we will also try to be mindful of those God used to care for us; family, friends, neighbors, the attendants at the service station, that waitress at the restaurant, and countless more.

This Thanksgiving, if you think of it, pause to remember that we are not the only contributors to making life good for ourselves; others have helped. Thank someone for the part they played in making your life better. Perhaps you may also receive the blessing of being thanked for the part you played in the life of someone else.
