Expansions Yield 200 New Jobs for Prince Albert

Oct 17, 2015 | 9:23 AM

Earlier this month the 144 bed expansion to the Prince Albert Correctional Centre was formally opened by my colleague, the Honourable Christine Tell, Minister of Corrections and Policing.  This new $24 million unit is an investment that brings with it more than 100 brand new, good paying jobs to the Prince Albert area.

This builds on a 60-bed expansion to the Pine Grove Correctional Centre for women in 2013 – an investment that brought 92 new jobs to Prince Albert.  Together, these investments have produced nearly 200 brand new, good paying jobs and will help ensure there are enough beds to house the offender population.

These are just two examples of how the Government of Saskatchewan has helped to grow the local economy by investing in Prince Albert.  Growing jobs through infrastructure investments like these expansions, has contributed to Saskatchewan maintaining the lowest unemployment rate in Canada for two straight years.

Since 2007, Saskatchewan people have helped create 69,800 net new jobs – an average of 24 new jobs per day or 1 new job per hour.   The most recent employment figures from Statistics Canada show private sector gains that point to a confident business community that is hiring and making investments right across the province.

Farmland Consultation

During farmland ownership consultations held earlier this year, 3200 people submitted their views to the Government of Saskatchewan. The vast majority of respondents do not support pension plans or foreign investors purchasing farmland in Saskatchewan.  They do, however, support our government in taking a stronger role in enforcing farmland ownership rules.  The complete results are available at saskatchewan.ca/farmland.  Next steps will be announced later this fall.
