Numbers Reveal Opportunity

Sep 11, 2015 | 10:37 AM

There were more people working in Prince Albert this summer, according to the latest figures from Statistics Canada. Comparing July of 2014 to July of 2015, the number of people working in Prince Albert increased by 1,200.

In August, Saskatchewan added another 4,000 jobs in August and, at 4.7%, maintained the lowest unemployment rate Canada for the 23rd consecutive month.

These latest numbers are very likely a reflection of the new opportunities people have been able to access over the past number of years.

Some of this opportunity has come through new and expanding businesses in our city, offering more jobs. SaskJobs.ca regularly has about 550 postings, of all skill levels, for Prince Albert.

Key to successful and sustained employment is education.  New and expanded educational programs have created a solid path for many to take advantage of a favourable employment climate.

Our Saskatchewan Party government has partnered to provide new apprenticeship programs to train people in specialized fields and have worked to eliminate the wait list for Adult Basic Education (ABE).

By reducing barriers and providing greater access to education, more people are learning the skills they need to succeed in a growing and diversified labour market.

In this year’s budget, post-secondary institutions with campuses in Prince Albert saw funding increases.  Our government is committed to providing opportunity through education.

Saskatchewan’s population and economy continues to grow.  Our government will continue to support growth while working to keep the province’s finances in balance at the end of each year.

Prince Albert Northcote is a diverse and dynamic constituency.  I am privileged to bring your unique voice to Regina, which has influenced policies that have made access to opportunities easier.

It is your voice that guides us.  I ask that you continue to write, phone, e-mail or visit my office to provide your insights and suggestions.  It is through these discussions we can work with Saskatchewan people to keep Saskatchewan strong.
