School age children need to be supervised by a responsible adult.

Yet the reality of today’s society puts pressure for children to spend part of their day at home on their own or with a sibling, often due to the parent’s work schedule. There are a few safety tips that both parents and children can observe that will prevent problems from occurring.

Parents need to first put in place the structure that provides a safe and supervised environment even when there is no adult at home:

  • Set firm rules, with clear do’s and don’ts.
  • If something does happe,n what should the children do> If there was a fire what is the designated meeting place?
  • Give the children some projects that are easy to complete such as walking the dog, simple and easy to do house chores.
  • Keep in touch with mom or dad via the phone.
  • Ensure that the home is safe and secure.
  • If an emergency does happen, how can the child reach a family member, relative or responsible neighbor?

Children who spend time at home can easily in engage in activities that might not be appropriate. There are those elements of today’s society that would think of harming a child who is left at home alone.

Children need to practice safety each and everyday.

  • Do you lock the door behind you when you enter the home after school?
  • Do you call mom or dad to tell them you have arrived home safely?
  • Don’t invite anyone over unless a parent is around.
  • Make sure the house key is always in a safe place.
  • Put your jacket, book bag and other things away as soon as you get home.
  • Have a healthy snack like juice, milk, yogurt, fruit or a sandwich. Avoid high sugar snacks or things like chips which contain a lot of fat.
  • Get your homework out of the way, right away.
  • Never open the door to anyone.
  • If someone calls on the phone, never say you are alone. Take a message or even tell the caller your mom is busy and will call you right back.
  • Look at your things to do list and get those things done right away.
  • Read a book, work on a hobby or craft, play a game.
  • In an emergency dial 9-1-1. Help is a quick phone call away.

If parents establish a clear set of guidelines and children follow them, incidents can be prevented. Practice safety each and every day.
