Community Agencies True Leaders

Aug 16, 2015 | 2:09 PM

This summer over 13,000 northern Saskatchewan residents were forced to leave their homes due to forest fires. During that time, they managed to stay strong in unfamiliar surroundings. They did it with the help of a multitude of organizations that sprang into action to create safe shelters for those displaced.

Last week, I was privileged to visit some of the Prince Albert organizations with Premier Brad Wall. We wanted to express our gratitude, and review how they expertly coordinated efforts to care for more than 4,800 of the evacuees.

Each organization approached the monumental task before them with a blend of strong leadership and humility. When we asked one agency how they pulled it off, there was a simple response.

“We just did it.”

That single statement exemplifies the tremendous leadership our city can call upon at a moment’s notice. A humble statement, it carries the weight of hundreds of unsung heroes in Prince Albert.

With resources and people stretched to the max, they carried on until people could return to their homes. Our community rose to the task.

The Salvation Army provided thousands of outfits to individuals, as well as daily meals.  The Prince Albert Mobile Crisis Unit assisted families in difficulty with inspiration and hope.

When visiting the Red Cross, the premier and I were amazed to see reams of paperwork being processed.  Approximately 7,000 vouchers covered tables, each representing assistance to an individual or family, efficiently handled by the Red Cross’ dedicated staff.

The creative people at the YWCA worked their magic to keep families active, making it an easier time for children. They also helped with clothing or personal needs, and helping to unite family members.

The Prince Albert Fire Department took action by sent multiple crews to assist in the firefighting efforts. They took action to protect northern community assets, while other firefighters and military personnel were on the front lines.

The overall response shows that in a way, Saskatchewan has a fierce, small town spirit; we’ve got each other’s back.

These are only some of the groups deserving of recognition that we were able to meet with. There are many more.

Thank you, to all of the people of Prince Albert for meeting this unprecedented challenge, and making sure people were welcomed and cared for.

Your work showcases the best of our community. It is a reminder that our greatest strength as a province is Saskatchewan people.  Our motto is well chosen: From many peoples strength.
