Aweful Adult Acne

Dec 18, 2014 | 11:03 AM

Let me be blunt. Adult Acne bites. I know because I’m an adult acne sufferer, just like my father was.

I used to believe that nothing I put on my face helped.  Products made my face sore and dry, did nothing or made me break out worse.  I spent buckets of money doing ‘the buy and try’, desperately surfing store shelves looking for something, anything, that might work.  Oh, they all SAID they’d work.

Then I learned about cosmetic ingredients and things started to turn around for me.

Brand doesn’t matter.  TV commercials don’t matter.  Any company can say anything they want on TV.  After all, they’re paying for that commercial!  What does matter – the thing that can make the difference – is what is in that cleanser or moisturizer; what that ingredient is designed to do.

Things to look for in acne products:

  • Salicylic acid is an exfoliant. Use it in a wash, a toner or a cream. Some forms might dry your skin. Ease up and use less than what the bottle says, if this happens.  Avoid eye area with the cream and toner.
  • Benzoyl peroxide is most often, found in a little tube of lotion. This stuff is most effective if you put about half a teaspoon on wet finger tips and spread it all over the face.  Avoid the eye area completely.  Only apply every third day to avoid having the skin drying out. Do it before bed only.  Make sure you wash your hands after and that your face is totally dry before you hit the pillow.  It will bleach all fabrics.
  • Retinol needs to be applied at bed time only as it can create sun sensitivity if used during the day. Avoid the eye area.
