Keeping Prince Albert and Area Strong

Sep 18, 2014 | 8:02 AM

Saskatchewan and Prince Albert in particular can be proud of what we’ve accomplished together. Our provincial budget is balanced, our taxes are lower and our growing province is allowing us to invest in improvements that will keep our city strong and moving forward.

Our government has committed to the renewal of Victoria Hospital and to partner with both the local and federal levels of government to help fund a second bridge for Prince Albert. These commitments build on other investments that include more police officers, the new Pineview Terrace Lodge, a new Gymnasium for Carlton Comprehensive and ongoing investments in housing. I am proud to say that, since 2007, our government has invested more than $29 million into 296 housing units that are either completed or are currently under construction in Prince Albert.

As the Legislative Secretary to the Minister of Government Relations for Northern Saskatchewan, I am pleased with the accomplishments our government has made in the areas of affordable housing in Northern Saskatchewan. While there is always more work to be done, we are committed to continue partnering to build safe, healthy and vibrant communities across the north. This fall, for example, we saw the grand opening of several housing projects in the communities of La Ronge, La Loche, Buffalo Narrows and Pinehouse Lake.

In Buffalo Narrows, the targeted client groups will be single seasonal workers, full-time individuals working in the area year-round and possibly pensioned seniors.
Eight units of affordable rental housing is provided in La Ronge to students enrolled in post-secondary education. The Northern Teacher Education Program Council Inc. (NORTEP) identified the need for students pursuing their education to have safe, secure and appropriate housing. This housing will afford students the opportunity to focus on their studies which will greatly increase their chance of success.
The Province of Saskatchewan partnered with the Government of Canada, the Northern Lights School Division and Île-à-la-Crosse School Division to build many of these units. Students came from the La Loche Community School, Dené Building in La Loche, Rossignol High School in Île-à-la-Crosse, Twin Lakes High School in Buffalo Narrows, and Churchill High School in La Ronge. These young people became involved in building their community and gained apprenticeship opportunities and new skills. Most importantly, these students are helping Saskatchewan families in housing need.

These projects are aligned with a number of strategic priorities that were outlined in the Government of Saskatchewan’s Provincial Housing Strategy. These priorities include the need to improve housing affordability and to support individuals and families in greatest need of housing. Since 2011, the Government of Saskatchewan has invested $326 million to develop more than 5,600 units and repair more than 24,300 homes around the province.

Local traffic, tourists and shippers are set to benefit from a new bridge at St. Louis. The realignment of Highway 2 with the new St. Louis Bridge is a $13.3 million project that includes grading and paving the new road north of the bridge, paving the new road south of the bridge, grading the Hoey access road, and some repaving on Highway 25 near St. Louis.

The completion of the project will be a major benefit to our economy as it is the final piece in a primary weight corridor that will allow the heaviest legal weights on Highway 2 from La Ronge to Assiniboia. Detours will be in place until the new bridge opens to traffic later this fall. To learn more about Saskatchewan work zones, visit highways.gov.sk.ca/workzone/.
