Frozen

It’s based on a story by Hans Christian Andersen, and “Frozen” is by far the coolest movie in theatres this week. What makes this movie so special you ask? The answer is simple: A great story, memorable characters, and jokes that kids of “all ages” can enjoy.

The story is based around two sisters (Anna and Elsa), both daughters of the king and queen. Elsa discovers at a young age that she has magical powers. She learns that she can create a blizzard or snow hill with a single gesture of her hand. When an afternoon of fun nearly results in tragedy, young Elsa is locked away in one of the bedrooms. Years later, she emerges on the eve of her coronation as queen. Once again she loses control of her powers, inciting panic within the town and ultimately transforming the small town into a winter wasteland. Scared and desperate, Elsa runs for the hills for safety. Anna, determined to save her sister, sets out to find Elsa and convince her to come home. Along the way, Anna encounters love, betrayal, and makes friends with a very animated snowman named Olaf.

I do not think Frozen is in the same league as The Lion King or The Little Mermaid, but it is worth checking out. I read one review by an adult film critic who commented that he nearly cried. There are definitely a few emotional moments in this movie, but I think that particular review was a bit of an exaggeration.

My other critique of this movie is the soundtrack. Typically Disney movies have at least one unforgettable song that you cannot get out of your head (“Be my guest”, “Under the Sea”, “Hakuna Matata”… I could go on). Other than that, Frozen is the perfect movie for the holiday season. I definitely recommend you take the family to see it.
