Comic-Con Wrap

Jul 22, 2013 | 1:13 PM

Well Comic-Con has ended but there were some major news drops during every day of the event.

Let’s jump into the biggest story of the week, Superman/Batman.

I’ll give a little background; this idea has been kicked around since before Tim Burton made his first Batman movie in 1989.
In fact Burton based his film on the context of Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight Returns, which Zack Snyder said he’ll be basing this film off of.

At the time Warner Brothers just wasn’t interested in doing that type of film, and over the years when it kept coming up they kept shooting it down.

But here we are now, Man of Steel 2 was reported to be fast tracked for next year, but it seems Snyder has worked his magic to convince execs that this is the right way to go to lead into a Justice League film.

And rightfully so, rather than just busting into a Justice League movie without introducing more characters, Snyder is giving the studio a chance to veto ANOTHER Batman origin story film and jump right to the juicy part.

My assumption is we’ll have Superman who has already been introduced in Man Of Steel, meeting the fabled Batman from Gotham City who has already been established as a vigilante hero.

A military alliance between Superman and the government has already seemingly been established in the first Man of Steel so like in Frank Miller’s graphic novel, Superman is coerced by the government to deal with Batman (probably not because of his mutant army, that would be too complex).

The two get into it and Batman kicks Supe’s butt but also makes him realize that superheroes need to be governed by their own and hence the Justice League is born.

However it’s done, I am sure Zack Snyder (hopefully with David S. Goyer…maybe even Christopher Nolan?) will do it right, and it is going to be epic.

Some suggestions on casting for Batman involve pulling in no-name or low key actors just starting their career like they did with Henry Cavill for Man of Steel.

Yes I totally agree with this, the only way that Michael Keaton, Val Kilmer and Christian Bale (yes I left out George Clooney and you damn well know why) did well as Batman is because they were still fairly fresh in their film careers. Keaton just coming out of working with Burton on Beetlejuice, Kilmer only having been in films like Top Gun, Willow and Tombstone, and Bale coming out of his success from American Psycho and The Machinist (he was also in Mio and the Land of Faraway…who remembers that move? The dude with the giant beard that they ride? That was messed up!)

So pulling an actor who is still freshly coming out of a singular or two big hits (preferably indie hits), would probably be the best route to take.

Also announced was The Flash movie (thank you Warner Brothers!) coming in 2016, hopefully they don’t screw it up like The Green Lantern, and the Justice League film is announced now for 2017, pushed two years ahead from its original 2015 date which the Superman/Batman film will take.

Also on the Warner Brothers roster is the Godzilla Reboot. Fans at the panel were treated to a fresh look at Godzilla, as well as one of the Kaiju he will be fighting, which was described as an insect-like monster attacking a train and an airport.

Viewers of the tease state that when Godzilla showed up to take on this monster, he was much, MUCH bigger.

If the teaser poster has any indication of his size, he’s pretty damn enormous.

Hopefully we’ll be seeing this teaser this summer, I would have assumed it would premiere with Pacific Rim, however it seems that Warner Brothers/Legendary Pictures were hoping to keep it under wraps until the Comic-Con panel.

And this is where the frustrating part comes in, hiding everything there is to do with a film until the last minute. Yes it generates some level of excitement and mystery but throw us a bone!

It seems like they are taking the same route as the crappy 90’s remake of Godzilla where none of the trailers actually showed a full shot of the monster, and we didn’t even get to see what it looked like until like 30 minutes into the movie.

I’m still excited for this film, the cast is amazing, and the director Gareth Edwards has captured my attention since his indie film Monsters (which also has a sequel coming out…eeeek).

And continuing with the Warner Brothers/Legendary Pictures team up comes the update on the World of Warcraft film.

How long has this been in production for? I think it’s contending with Ghostbusters 3 for longest production hell stay.

But apparently some concept CGI was shown in the form of an Orc getting ready for battle, which some people mistook to begin with as a Planet Hulk film.

I hope this means it’s moving forward because I actually would like to see this film.

Other updates include a first look at Ceaser in Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, he looks like an older ape.

The looks for the hero crew in Guardians of the Galaxy were revealed and an apparently pretty sweet teaser with John C. Reily was premiered as well.

Fox unveiled the look of the sentinels for X-Men Days of Future past and that the story would revolve around Wolverine travelling to the past characters of X-Men First Class to warn them about an apocalyptic future.

Vin Diesel announced during his Riddick panel that he would be announcing his news concerning his talks with Marvel at the end of the month; many are speculating he will be the voice of Ultron in the new Avengers film.

And of course Joss Whedon revealed the Avengers film would be titled The Avengers: Age of Ultron…however it would not be based on the comics, which means no Ant-Man just yet.

Also a tease showing Jamie Foxx’s Electro from the Amazing Spider-man 2 and the new Catching Fire trailer for the Hunger Games Triology were unveiled.

Other than that TV series panels teased upcoming seasons like Supernatural, Doctor Who, Family Guy, The Simpsons (with upcoming episodes including a crossover with Family Guy and a crossover with Futurama!), and so on.

Check out this freakin’ sweet trailer for the upcoming season of Family Guy.
