42/The Place Between the Pines

Apr 22, 2013 | 7:05 AM

“42” hits a home run. It was everything I had hoped it would be and more. Mark my words Harrison Ford will get a nod for an Oscar next year.

Based on the real-life story of baseball hall of famer Jackie Robinson, this movie chronicles his battles on the field, as well as his struggles off the field, as the first black baseball player to play in the big leagues. My favourite line is “we defeated fascism in Germany, it’s time we defeated racism here at home.” 42 will take a swing at every emotion in your body. You will cheer Jackie Robinson when he hits the game winning home run, cry with him when he nearly gives up, and feel anger towards the ignorant people who attempt to dissuade him.

“42” is a definite must see.

“The Place between the Pines”

This is a pretty decent movie overall but one that is better worth renting than watching in theatres.

Ryan Gosling, Brad Cooper, Ray Liotta, and Eve Mendes star in this movie that feels like three movies packed into one. Ryan Gosling’s character resembles a cross between Billy Idol and James Dean. After learning that a woman he once had a fling with had a baby, Gosling quits his job as a circus performer to provide for his son. Sounds honest right? Frustrated by his inability to make enough money, Gosling begins to rob banks. Brad Cooper plays a rookie cop, and Eva Mendes plays the mother of Gosling’s son, who is trying to move on with her own life. Without giving the plot away, this is one of those movies where the characters are all connected in some way.

“The Place between the Pines” feels a bit long and drawn out, but there is nothing wrong with the story or the acting. I just think I would have enjoyed it more from the comfort of my couch, and my $20 would have been better spent on ordering a pizza.
