Stress, Sun and Smoke Sabotage Skin

Feb 14, 2013 | 10:23 AM

Did you know your skin is an organ, just like your stomach or pancreas? Did you know it’s the body’s largest organ? Part of its function is to keep out invaders like bacteria. We need it to be healthy and we like it to look good in the bargain.

The worst things for your skin’s appearance all start with the letter ‘s’. They are stress, sun, and smoking. I like to add in a fourth ‘S’ word – Sleep or more specifically, a lack of it.

We’ve all seen someone whom we know is under extreme stress and we’ve noted that they looked like they’ve aged 15 years.

Sun exposure in younger years shows up as sun damage in the forties and beyond. Sun spots and age spots, broken capillaries in the cheeks and nose – all of these can be blamed on sun exposure in days gone by.

Smoking breaks down collagen in skin. Skin loses its elasticity and sags. Lines are deeper and more etched.

When we sleep is when the body does most of its repair and rejuvenation. If we aren’t getting sleep, it shows and we often get comments like “you look tired.” It’s not your hair or hands that look tired. It’s the skin on your face.

Yes, your skin is like the canary in the coal mine. Its appearance can be a strong indicator of your overall health and wellbeing. Figure out ways to manage your stress, reduce sun exposure and take sun breaks, quit smoking, and get some sleep. Your skin will thank you.
