Affordable Housing a Priority

Dec 3, 2012 | 8:48 AM

Another affordable rental housing project has opened in Prince Albert. The new four-plex was built to accommodate seniors with dependants. Each unit has three bedrooms, ensuring grandparents raising their grandchildren will have a safe, secure and affordable place to call home.

Partnering with the Prince Albert Community Housing Society Inc. (PACHSI), our government provided $520,500 to the project through the Saskatchewan Housing Corporation. PACHSI funded the balance.

In the last five years, 132 affordable rental units have been built in Prince Albert, including 26 units for seniors. Your Saskatchewan Party government is committed to meet Saskatchewan’s housing challenges head-on. The partnerships we have in Prince Albert are making great things happen here!

People were encouraged to “Connect for Help” during Saskatchewan Addictions Awareness Week (SAAW) in November. Residents were reminded that local addictions services are provided and accessible in every health region.

Earlier this fall, the Valley Hill Youth Treatment Centre in Prince Albert opened its doors. This 15-bed facility provides a six-week residential treatment program to Saskatchewan youth ages 12 to 17. Support workers in their community help them when they return home.

In addition, an eight-unit provincial family treatment facility in Prince Albert is anticipated to open early next year. This facility will primarily serve women with addictions who experience difficulty in providing care to their young children. On-site childcare is part of this inpatient program and will help to make it easier for residents to complete their treatment.

It is part of our government’s effort to increase public awareness about the risk of alcohol and drug use, and promote healthy lifestyles among all Saskatchewan people.

Our government’s commitment to continuing to move Saskatchewan forward was seen again in the recent announcement regarding the Information Services Corporation (ISC). New legislation will allow ISC to take the next steps to expand into new markets and continue growing. It will allow for shares in the provincially owned corporation to be sold to the public with the province retaining 40 per cent ownership. Of the 60% of shares open for public offering, 45% are available for Saskatchewan citizens.

Under this legislation, your private records remain in government hands and ISC’s head office stays in Saskatchewan. This move is also about using the benefits of growth to improve the quality of life for you and your family. The sale of shares in ISC is expected to raise between $90 million and $120 million, which will then go towards addressing the infrastructure needs of our growing province.

I am proud to be a part of a government that is willing to apply common sense solutions, rather than be bound to the status quo. Premier Brad Wall demonstrated that recently by attending the recent Premier’s Conference via teleconference.

Through another innovative program, the Saskatchewan Advantage Scholarship program, our government has awarded more than 4,000 scholarships worth over $2 million.

This program was introduced last spring and is open to Saskatchewan grade 12 graduates enrolled in post-secondary education in our province. Students approved will receive up to $500 per year to a lifetime maximum of $2,000 over ten years. It is a great example of how Saskatchewan residents are enjoying the benefits of growth.
