The immigrant story makes Canada Day special

Jul 2, 2012 | 11:22 AM

Canada is an example to the world of how a mosaic can really work with many different cultures able to maintain their language, religion and culture while living in unison within our national community.

This Canadianism is our history – however imperfect. Canadians have created this country with First Nations and immigrants first from European countries and later from around the world.

Today, Prince Albert has a wide variety of cultures from across the globe making our city diverse, with many people coming to us regularly to make a better life and to contribute to our country.

One example is Mideum Lee and his wife Misun Lim from South Korea.

Mideum was in Regina to receive his highschool education from 2005 until 2009. From graduation, he returned home to South Korea, married and decided to return to Saskatchewan to attend Saskatchewan Institute of Applied Science and Technology at Woodland Campus in Prince Albert. They arrived in March, 2012. He is training to be a welder.

Canada represents opportunity to Mideum and Misun. With plans to remain in Canada, the couple looks forward to creating a life in this country and are particularly looking forward to celebrating Canada Day .

“To us, Canada is a place with so many chances and Canada Day is special because it gives us a great chance to celebrate and to meet with other Canadians. It is a good way to get to know more about this country and to get to know each other,” Mideum and Misun agree.

The Prince Albert Multicultural Centre was founded by Marge Nainaar, an immigrant herself, who wanted a centre which would help newcomers and would also celebrate everything about Canada.

Since its inception, the centre has been a Canada Day celebration host for Prince Albert.

Though Nainaar has passed away, the tradition continues and Canada Day celebrations was once again be at the Riverbank, bringing new immigrants and Canadians of all backgrounds together for a fun-filled evening of music, food and entertainment.
