Relay for Life is now days away!

On June 1, Prince Albert will be celebrating the annual Canadian Cancer Society Relay for Life. Harry Jerome Track will be alive with the sounds of music, laughter and even a few tears as teams gather to Celebrate, Remember and Fight Back! There is still time to register your team. You can do so by calling Charlene at 764-4808. Now is also the time to enlist the support of our many volunteers and of course register the honoured guests our survivors. Let’s meet this year’s honorary chair for the 2012 Relay for Life in Prince Albert.

My name is Donovan Fraser and I am 13 years old. I was diagnosed with Leukemia in June of 2011. This year I am going to be Honorary Chair at the 2012 Relay for Life. To me the Relay is a chance to help others who are also going through Cancer. It is a time to support those who are currently going through treatments and a time to remember your loved ones who have lost the battle with cancer. You also have the pleasure of honoring those who have WON the battle and are now survivors.

By taking part in this relay, I have the chance to feel extremely proud about myself for raising money that will help with cancer research and the families involved. I have no idea who any of these people are and that is the magic about it. We are all here to help people that are strangers to us and yet we all somehow feel connected in a way. Almost everyone knows someone affected by cancer or has gone through it themselves. So it touches everyone at some point.

The Relay for Life is an opportunity to get a group of friends and family together, pick a crazy name and dress your team to be noticed. You will set up a tent and have an all night long party with the ones that chose to support you and this wonderful cause! You will have a chance to meet new people who may or may not be going through the same thing as you. You can exchange stories and see that you are not alone in this fight. There are many others that have been where you are. You will meet a very large group of people who want the same as you, .to find a cure for cancer. Maybe one day in the near future cancer will be as simple as a common cold, you will have a few weeks of discomfort and some medications and then you will be back to your regular self in no time.

Relay is about you and me taking up the challenge to Fight Back against cancer. All of us know or have been somehow touched by cancer. Relay is one way we can with friends, family or the gang from work, stand together to Celebrate, Remember and Fight Back!
