A significant event was held recently at the Saskatchewan legislature in recognition of the tremendous contri-butions made by Métis people to our province’s social, cultural and economic development. On November 30, the legislature came alive with the sounds of music and celebration as a beautiful Métis sash was presented to the Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan.
This celebration is especially fitting since 2010 was earlier proclaimed by our Premier Brad Wall as Year of the Métis. This year is also the 125th Anniversary of the 1885 Northwest Resistance. Métis contributions span every industry and sector throughout the province, so the investiture of a Métis symbol in the Legislative Chamberis very significant.
The specially-designed Métis sash was presented to the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly Don Toth by Métis Elder Nora Cummings and President Robert Doucette, two individuals who have played critical roles in promoting Métis rights and interests throughout the province. The sash will rest on the table in the Legislative Chamber alongside the First Nations beaded mace runner and beaver pelt pillow that the mace rests on each time the House sits. These symbols serve as physical reminders of the Métis and First Nations ancestry that has played a significant role in the birth of our province. They also remind us of the wonderfully diverse and unique communities we represent and serve.
Our government would like to offer a special thank you to Mr. Pat Adams who created the Métis Sash. Mr. Adams is an inspiring and award-winning artist, whose work was recently featured at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. Thank you for sharing your work and your talent with our province.
