World Health Day – April 7

Apr 5, 2012 | 4:32 AM

April 7 marks world health day! This year the year the theme is Good Health – Adds years to Life. The focus looks at how enhance the health of our senior’s leads to a healthier population. As we age things just might not work as well as they once did. Eye sight is diminished, hearing might be diminished and reaction time can become a bit slower. Being one of many senior’s doesn’t mean that life suddenly has to stop. But taking steps to avoid injury is something we can all do!

One of the most common incidents that a senior will experience will be a fall. Falls account for countless injuries and can not only lead to recovering from an injury but maybe a whole new lifestyle. Consider this an independent senior who falls, breaks a hip, and may require considerable hospital and rehabilitation time. The loss of independence because of the fall may change the lifestyle from independent to one that is now dependent on others. From living alone to now possibly assisted living. The loss of independence is one thing many seniors voice as a concern to health issues. But often easy things that we can all make changes in will safe guard an older adult.

Prevent falls by limiting clutter, a clear path without loose carpets, piles of newspapers or other obstructions. Wear good footwear even inside the house gives a sure foot underneath. Slippers might be cozy but certainly offer no traction for an active senior. Keep things well lit and within reach. As we age we are challenge with mobility that might require one to use a cane or walker. Some might say “those are for the outdoors, as I have plenty of things to grab onto around the house to keep balance.” Use those aids both indoors and out. In a hurry to get the phone or answer the door bell might be a cause for falling. Get a cordless phone or take your time answering the door. Consider a medical assistance button that when subscribed to, pushing the button, summons assistance as required. A wet kitchen or bathroom floor can be a hazard at any age, let alone a senior.

If you do fall, don’t be in a rush to get up or get someone up. If the person is not awake, get medical assistance immediately. If you or the person who fell complain of pain to their head, neck or back. Do not move and again get immediate medical assistance. Before trying to get up move things around. Do the arms, legs and hips seem okay? Are you or the injured person dizzy or lightheaded? If anything is not right seek some medical assistance. When in doubt call the paramedics out!
