“Hunger Games” satisfies the appetite

Based on the best selling books by Suzanne Collins, “Hunger Games” is the next big movie trilogy for the young adult crowd. While the movie may be geared more for the 12 to 17 year old age group, I definitely think that the older crowd will find it appealing as well.

If you are like me, and have not read the books, here is the breakdown. “Hunger Games” is set in a futuristic world. As a means to control its citizens, the government creates the Hunger Games and forces its citizens to take part once a year. Two people are chosen by lottery from each of the 12 districts–one female and one male. After a few weeks of training the “tributes” are then thrown into this holographic world that can be controlled by the games’ programmers. Just like “Highlander”, there can be only one. The winner is literally the last person standing. They must fight for their survival either by killing off their opponents or simply surviving the elements.

Fans of the TV show “Survivor” will enjoy this movie, except this game is far more violent because the players are getting stabbed, shot with arrows, or getting eaten alive by large mutant dogs. There is plenty of blood and guts, but nothing I found too overly offensive. You may still want to be cautious before taking your little ones to it.

Jennifer Lawrence does a great job in the lead character role. Lenny Kravitz (yes the rock star) and Woody Harrelson are also very good in the supporting actor roles. Donald Sutherland is the President.
