“Goon” delivers knockout punch

I will start off by saying that “Goon” is no “Slapshot”; but it is still a very funny movie. If you are a fan of sports movies, this movie is comparable to “Major League”, but on ice. With the addition of their new enforcer, the Halifax Highlanders snap their lifelong losing streak and become a competitive team that other teams fear. The misfit group will have you laughing from the opening face-off.

Sean William Scott is very good in the lead role. He has come a long way from Stiffler in the “American Pie” movies. Scott’s character “Doug Glatt” is a somewhat awkward, and innocent guy (Forrest Gump came to mind), who has had no real success in life. He soon discovers he has a talent for hockey (enforcer not skater) and gets picked up by the local hockey team. When sweet, loveable Doug steps on the ice, he becomes a ruthless thug, who will do whatever it takes to protect his teammates.

I think some of the attraction to this movie, is that it really is a Canadian movie. Not only is it made in Canada, a lot of the dialogue and situations really make you appreciate being Canadian (yes the word “eh” is used a few times).

This movie also offers something for the romance buff. The relationship between Doug and his love interest is quite comical. A line by Eva (Doug’s love interest) may go down as one of my all-time favourite romantic lines in a movie. She says to Doug: ”You make me wanna stop sleeping with lots of different guys….to which Doug replies, “that’s the nicest thing anyone has ever said to me.” Who said romance was dead?
