It is a universally known truth that there are few things in life as fine as a fresh, garden raised tomato; that it is a delicacy to have locally grown, grass-fed beef.

These are wonderful treats to have – rare, in fact – in spite of the fact that we live in an agricultural based province.

This is the reason why Farmer’s Markets are so popular, to suit the needs of people who want to buy locally grown, freshly produced, grass fed or vine ripened food. Increasingly this is the case.

There is a group of like-minded people thinking about, maybe, perhaps, exploring the idea of creating a cooperative organization that would open a small grocery store in Prince Albert’s downtown that would be supplied by local producers of beef, pork, bison, vegetables and so on. The thinking is that it would be wonderful to be able to grocery shop for locally produced … produce – without running to several different locations and to be able to shop during daily business hours as opposed to only one or two days a week. For producers, having such a store would be much more convenient way of selling their wares than standing at a booth for several hours per week.

But interested people are needed to form the cooperative.

It’s one thing to have an idea – it’s another to bring in people dedicated enough to make it work.
So there will be a potluck dinner Sunday, February 26th – noon –  at the Prince Albert Arts Centre.

This potluck dinner will be the first in a series designed to gather ideas and establish the feasibility of such an endeavor.

What else is going on in the Community?

Well, the Mann Gallery of Art is hosting a really great fundraiser mixing the desire of the community to see the paintings of local artists with the trend of house concerts.

The MAG will be hosting a fundraiser on January 21st at 7:00pm. The event is a combination of live entertainment featuring the musical styling of Prince Albert's ALL MIGHTY VOICE as well as an introduction to our 2011 Permanent Collection Acquisitions. Tickets are 20$ a piece and are available at the Mann Art Gallery in the E.A. Rawlinson Centre.

This band has had several performances in the community and was a huge success at the Evergreen Artisan Market at the EA Rawlinson Centre last November. There is a YouTube video of the band at Evergreen to be found by following this link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=On5GkBe_Q0E .

Tickets are available at the Mann Art Gallery in the E.A. Rawlinson Centre OR you can email me at kcay@panow.com and if you live or work in Prince Albert I will personally deliver tickets to you prior to the event. How's that for a deal?

For the Scottish, or Scottish at heart the Prince Albert Caledonian Society are hosting a Robbie Burns Supper featuring the Prince Albert Highland Pipes and Drums. These suppers are always a lot of fun – evenings of great food (yes, even the Haggis), great music and dance and great laughs.
This event is Friday, January 27th at the Prince Albert Travelodge.

For those who love big band music and swing dancing, there are two great events going on one after the other.

The Heritage Centre is hosting Swing Dance Lessons Friday January 20 at the Heritage Center (across from E. A. Rawlinson Center) with the lessons 7:30 – 8:15 p.m. with a dance to follow. Singles and beginners are welcome.

Bring your own beverage & snacks. Members $5, Non-members $10 (Lifetime memberships available
at the door for $10). Call 922-0152 for more information.

The next evening the fantastic Millennium Swing Orchestra is hosting a swing dance to raise money for the SPCA. Tickets are $20 and the event is at Midtown Hall.
