Service disruptions planned for Shellbrook Hospital

Jul 14, 2011 | 9:14 AM

For the third time this year, there are service disruptions planned for Shellbrook Hospital Emergency Department.

From 5 p.m. until 8 a.m. July 15, 18, 20 and 25 the Emergency Department will not be available to the public because of a lack of physician coverage.

This is a continuation of the closures that occurred in May and June, after a contract physician completed his term in the community.

The situation could get worse as an additional three physicians prepare to depart the community at the end of the month.

The health region is looking at implementing a more permanent solution, said Doug Dahl, communications officer for the Prince Albert Parkland Health Region.

At this point the region will not confirm what that is, but it could involve coverage from physicians in neighbouring communities and the region is in talks with those doctors.

Ambulance providers will be notified and they will bypass the Shellbrook Hospital during the service disruptions.

If there is a serious illness or injury, the public is asked to call 911 for an ambulance or travel to the nearest open Emergency Department. If there are other inquiries, people can also contact HealthLine at 1-877-800-0002.

Dahl said the region will continue to provide updates about any service disruptions. For the most recent information, people can go to the Region’s website at princealbertparklandhealth.com.
