Construction begins on 2nd Ave

Jun 20, 2011 | 4:51 PM

The northbound lanes of Second Avenue West has been closed for road construction.

Milling and repaving will happen on Second Avenue West from 17th to 28th Street.

The city is warning drivers that there will be traffic delays while the work is underway.

The first segment to see work is the northbound stretch from 17th to 22nd Street.

Two-way traffic will share the southbound lanes in the meantime.

“We’re going to be pretty much that whole week to do that quotient, but we’ll mill it out and pave it and have it open for the weekend hopefully,” Kirk Wilson, operations co-ordinator for the City of Prince Albert.

The city does warn that the temporarily opened section could be a little rough due to milling operations.

Pending City approval the next section of Second Avenue around 28th Street will be worked on over the next weekend, Wilson said.

“It’s so we can get it open hopefully for the (July) long weekend.”

Wilson said the rainy weather shouldn’t be too much of a problem as they can perform milling operations through the weather. He added they will need a couple of dry days for the actual paving process.

Ruts appearing on the busy Second Avenue are the main reason for the needed repaving, Wilson said.

“We’re having a whole lot of heavy traffic and it’s a whole lot more traffic then we’ve had in the past.”

Haulers of wide loads are asked to contact the Public Works Department at 953-4900 to determine an alternate route during the road closures.
