Charlie’s Angels support SPCA

An annual charity golf tournament has once again raised thousands of dollars for the local SPCA while honouring the memory of a long-time animal lover who lost her battle with cancer five years ago.

The fifth-annual Charlie’s Angels Golf Tournament took place Saturday at Mark’s Nine Golf Course. The event raised $17,758.62 and a truck load of food and other donations for animals in need at the SPCA Prince Albert. The event has been held every year in July in honour of Charlene Welch, who passed away July 15, 2013.

“She was a little lady with a larger-than-life personality, lots of fun,” organizer Holly Abrey-Hare told paNOW. “She was a lot of fun, she loved to golf, she was just amazing.”

The ladies-only tournament attracted 64 golfers, and 16 caddies, Abrey-Hare said.

“Everybody had a great time and we raised a lot of money,” she added.

Kathleen Howell, vice-president of the SPCA board of directors, said the tournament has raised more than $82,000 since its inception. Howell said the animal shelter is currently at capacity for cats, and the facility is also caring for two litters of puppies, so donations are welcome.

“The SPCA can’t exist without it,” Howell said Monday. “This is an absolutely perfect time for this to come in for us, we are absolutely at capacity.”
