Food left out leads to increase in bear interactions near Candle Lake

People being careless with food have caused a rise in bear interactions in Candle Lake, according to a public notice issued by the resort village.

Village CAO Heather Scott told paNOW the public notice was requested by conservation officers, who had to shoot two bears in the area last week and trapped a third. Scott said she understands the majority of the human-bear interactions have occurred on the west side of the lake, but advised all residents and visitors to take steps to avoid attracting bears.

“We’re just asking people to put their food away,” she said.

Scott advised residents and visitors to store their garbage in a garage or shed and never leave garbage bags outdoors unless it is in a sealed or animal-proof receptacle. All recyclables stored outside should be rinsed thoroughly, and pet food bowls should also be kept indoors.
