Sentencing pushed back in Amber Alert case

Jun 21, 2018 | 2:00 PM

Sentencing arguments did not go ahead as planned Thursday in the case of a man guilty of the kidnapping and sexual assault of a young girl last year.

Jarrod John Charles was scheduled to be sentenced Thursday on the charges, which stem from an incident in Prince Albert last July. A province-wide Amber Alert was activated July 4, 2017 following the disappearance of an eight-year-old girl from a Prince Albert playground. The child was later found on an acreage outside the city.

Charles’ case has been adjourned several times already, partly because of issues with information in his Gladue report, which outlines his personal circumstances and status as an Aboriginal offender. The defence and Crown both said Thursday that they need more time to discuss the case before moving ahead with sentencing.

In provincial court Thursday, Judge Hugh Harradence expressed his disappointment with the adjournment, saying the case has generated a lot of interest from the public.
