Paramedics remind public to keep cool as heat rises

Jun 19, 2018 | 4:47 PM

In light of a heat warning being issued by Environment Canada, Parkland Ambulance is reminding people to keep cool in the high temperatures.

“You need to find some coolness,” Ambulance Spokesperson Lyle Karasiuk said. “Even having a simple fan blowing will reduce the air hitting you by five to seven degrees.”

He recommended people find buildings or common spaces with air conditioning to find reprieve from the sun. Staying hydrated is also a key to beating the heat. Karasiuk compared the human body to a pot of boiling water; when the water gets hot enough it will eventually evaporate.

“If we’re not adding water to the pot, eventually it will dry,” he said. “If we’re not adding water to our body, eventually we’ll get to the point where we go unconscious and literally are boiling from the inside out.”

Karasiuk recommended staying away from sugary beverages like soda and alcohol because they aren’t as hydrating as water. He also reminded residents to apply sunscreen and wear wide-brimmed hats to protect themselves from the harsh rays. People should also take time to check on their elderly relatives or neighbours in the hot weather.

According to Environment Canada, Prince Albert is expected to reach 32 C on Wednesday, some 10 degrees above the norm. Should temperatures break 31 degrees, a heat record set in 1946 would be broken.
