Challenging summer ahead for P.A. Food Bank

Jun 15, 2018 | 2:00 PM

June through September is the busiest time of year for the Prince Albert Food Bank, with thousands receiving help from their hamper program alone every month. Over the coming days the food bank is hoping the community can give them some much-needed support as we head into the challenging summer period.

They’re working alongside Save On Foods as part of a two-pronged drive to fill the food bank’s shelves. The store is running its company-wide ‘Share it forward’ initiative until Sunday, which means they’ll donate 25 per cent of all proceeds from the sale of their Western Family products to western Canadian food banks. Also the store’s staff are hosting a fundraising hot dog BBQ Friday to raise even more.

“Because of the job losses and financially-hard times, as the need for food in Prince Albert goes up our donations fall,” PA Food Bank executive director Wes Clark told paNOW. “Also this time of year we have several summer projects on the go and we really step up our work with the kids.”

Clark said the funds raised will go directly towards food for the needy.

“It’s nothing to be doing a thousand plus hampers in a given month, and that equates to up to three thousand people we’re serving just with the hamper program,” Clark said, noting the summer children’s programs also feed thousands more.

It’s Save On Foods’ first year of the ‘Share if forward’ initiative, and Alex Speckman, assistant manager at the P.A. branch, said the company has set a lofty goal.

“We’re aiming to donate $250,000 to food banks in western Canada,” he said.
