P.A. police apologize after K9 poops on man’s lawn

May 30, 2018 | 2:00 PM

Prince Albert Police have apologized to an East Hill resident after a K9 dog relieved itself on his lawn.

Matt Larson’s security camera recorded the incident May 25. In the video, which Larson shared to Facebook, the police dog can be seen defecating on his front lawn before the dog and handler move on without picking it up. Larson said he wasn’t “overly bothered” by the incident, though he expected a civilian would have been ticketed for the same thing.

“He should have picked it up,” Larson told paNOW. “They’d write a regular citizen a fine for that, and let’s face it, a lot of officers seem to ignore or abuse the laws they’re supposed to uphold.”

Under the city’s Responsible Pet Ownership Bylaw, “If a dog or cat defecates on any public or private property other than the property of its owner, the owner of the dog or cat shall remove the defecation immediately.”

Larson said people commenting on his video have shown mixed reactions. Some of the 12,000 people who viewed the video are laughing about the entire thing, he said, while others are much more critical.

A police spokesperson said the incident was brought to their attention Friday, and the matter was handled internally.

“The resident received an apology from PAPS and the excrements were removed from the lawn,” the spokesperson wrote in an email to paNOW. “This was an isolated incident during a live training simulation and is not a reflection of Prince Albert Police Service practices.”

Larson confirmed he did receive an apology from police, but said he picked up the mess himself.
